The RG Series has been around for 20 or so years and Ibanez makes no bones about it: these are metal guitars. Now we talked about the Ibanez Artist for beginners, and Ibanez S series and how they are used by a lot of metal musicians, but these guitars are specifically marketed as metal axes. Noah Carpenter from Skinless uses the RG. RG370DXGP2Their shape and overall appearance is very similar to the S Series, although some models like the RG370DXGP1 and 2 have some pretty metal-looking pain jobs. They have a wide variety of RG models to choose from, even a left-handed guitar, but let’s look into the Ibanez RG370DX.

The RG370DX is part of the RG Tremelo line and features their Edge III tremolo design. The Edge 3 is touted as having extraordinary tuning stability. Its double locking so I don’t doubt it stays in tune. Like the S470, this guitar has three pickups – 2 humbuckers and a single coil in between. I’ve seen a few complaints online about the durability of these pickups so keep that in mind. For me I usually wind up removing stock pickups and replacing them with EMGs if budget allows. Also this gtr has a 24-fret thin Wizard neck, neck thru but other RG models offer a cheaper bolt-on. The Wizard necks are said to be fast and known for their playability. The thin profile of the neck accommodates speed playing. The look of the neck is also very cool and very metal with the shark tooth inlays.

The sound of this guitar is pure metal. Pinch harmonics are cool and the sound is clean at all volumes. Distortion kills especially on the bridge pickup of course. The body is basswood which is lightweight, but some tone undoubtedly has to be sacrificed for the comfort and playability of basswood. This ain’t no heavy Les Paul or BC Rich guitar. Sometimes the pickups do create a minor but annoying noise.

Ultimately, as with most Ibanez guitars, the greatest strength of the Ibanez RG370DX is its playability. This thing appears to be made for metal shredding. Also a great strength is the cheap price in the $350 range. That’s pretty darn sweet for a neck thru metal axe! There are multiple price points for the different versions of the RG so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a new one that fits your budget. They’ve been around for 20+ years so if used Ibanez guitars are more your thing, you should be able to find one easily at your local independent guitar shop or even guitar center.
