The guitar is a wonderful, expressive instrument that brings joy to many people both players and listeners. However, there may be a few misguided folks out there thinking of picking up the guitar for the wrong reasons. So here are...
The 5 stupidest reasons to start playing guitar:
- You like how it looks on you
- To get chicks
- For the money
- To be the fastest shredder
- You’re really good at Guitar Hero
A guitar is not a fashion accessory. Go buy a belt.
Please we simply don’t need any more of this. Join an online dating site or something but please, we don’t need any more wanking by posers trying to get laid.
If you’re stupid enough to think guitar playing is somehow a viable pursuit to earn a living you are one sadly misinformed individual.
News flash: Fastest is not best, heaviest is not best, most brutal is not best, most extreme is not best. These are stupid gimmicks. Don’t try to be a gimmick.
Guitar Hero is not real guitar. If you’ve practiced and practiced and become really good at Guitar Hero, you have wasted your time. You have not learned a thing about real guitar.

Get the chicks, I think this one is a very popular one, at least as a teenager
now that i’m 29 and i still play as hobby my girlfriend couldn’t care less if i play or not.
if you ask me know i play the guitar cause i enjoy it, i play cause i like to write my own songs and put my creativity to the test, beautiful hobby that i hope to carry with me all my life.
I think Guitar Hero inspires some people to start playing real guitar, and that’s not a bad thing at all. It’s like “Hey, this is really fun, and I’m okay at it- I bet a real guitar will be even more enjoyable.”
1) By denouncing the desire for chicks over musical integrity, you have effectively eliminated the 80’s and 90’s, especially glam rock (crue, def leppard etc.)
2) I love the shape of guitars. I use Jacksons, Slayer model, which matches my taste in music. Imagine your surprise when I bust ot Yes, Rush, FLamenco etc,
other than that, Guitar Hero is just a game. I know plenty of guitar players who like it, and trust me, it will fade out in a yar or two, so it’s not some phenomenon that will kill the artform.
Fastest shredder? WHen you denounce Eruption and Malmsteen, you point people towards three-chord pop punk. SHRED!!!! GO OFF!!!! But learn it as a technique, and incorporate it into whatever you do. Don’t be all emo and dismiss a good Slayer solo.

Anything you can possibly do to get laid is worthwhile. Are you f-ing kiding me? BANG AS MANY CHICKS AS POSSIBLE! Dont be a dick about it, but for Pete’s sake… you are so transparent right now. I’m sorry your real guitar playing experiences have’t gotten you laid. Anyone who has gotten laid from playing this instrument (ahem) will tell you to… well, build a bridge to get over yourself.
Be human. Be real. Learn real guitar. Learn good music, not trendy MTV crap. Learn classic rock. Don’t be a dick. Get laid as much as possible. Get an awesome looking guitar that you love… after all, it’s your extension of your soul.

I started playing (taking lessons) about 5 months ago as something to do with my 13-year old son. He’s much better than me, and its fair to say that the only person who enjoys my guitar playing is me. There’s a certain sense of tranquility when I’m playing, as well as a sense of achievement when I can string several notes together, successfully. We are into classical guitar and sincerely enjoy the rich sounds coming from the guitar when playing.
I have to agree with “most stupidest thread ever” im just learning the guitar and my reason for playing is becuz Guitar Hero is fake id rather learn the real guitar. also who wants to go around sayin ” im good at playing the guitar…hero” I say what everfloats your boat. its not about how you started playing, it only matters that you are playing
those of you who dont play guitar go get one and try it. its the best hobby for an indoorist lazy person (like me)

I play guitar for a living!! So perhaps that should be 4 reasons not to… To be honest it wasn’t why I started to play, but it’s great work if you can get it.

I started playing a Mexi-Strat when I was 18, years before GH came out, but I started playing guitar to pick up DUDES. Is that a stupid reason?

Guitar, you can play it for maaany reasons. I play it as a musical student, sometimes teacher, and because When i’m sad the guitar talks better than my mouth. girls? only a myth. when I’m playing guitar, ..I remember that my ex girlfriends got bored easily, the more I played the sooner they ran away. mm when you’re alone it’s great, volume up!! and play.
